Welcome to Ralston Middle School

A California Distinguished School

Ralston Middle School serves all sixth through eighth grade students in the Belmont/Redwood Shores School District. During the 2011-2012 school year we anticipate an enrollment of approximately 1000 students. The Ralston staff provides a strong California standards-based instructional program. Every Ralston student receives instruction in the core subjects of language arts, history/social science, mathematics, science, physical education and health education. All students may select from a wide variety of elective classes.

Ralston students have the opportunity to participate in numerous extra-curricular activities. A comprehensive after-school sports program supported by School-Force provides team sports experiences in golf, basketball, cross-country, volleyball, tennis, and track and field. After school tutorial classes and homework groups are available three days per week for all grades. The PTA sponsors a diverse selection of clubs based on student and teacher interest. The clubs meet after school and are offered for a minimal fee. Our student body has an active student government, which sponsors spirit days, dances and other school wide activities.

Message from the Principal

Dear Ralston Community,

I am writing to you with many mixed emotions. As you may have already heard, I have been offered a wonderful opportunity to serve our school District in a new capacity as Director of Educational Services.  I realize in accepting this position that I will now be able to support the District’s vision for all schools in the Belmont Redwood Shores School District and that I will be able to contribute to our community on a larger scale.  Although I am excited about this next chapter in my professional life, I will certainly miss seeing all of the students and staff on a daily basis.  Ralston is such a special place. I have loved being the principal here and I am proud of the work we have done together.  I have loved getting to know your children and watching them grow through such crazy and turbulent developmental years. I will miss their daily smiles, their incredible energy and contagious exuberance.  I marvel at their zest for life, their curiosity and willingness to take risks. Your students have inspired me and have taught me many lessons.  I believe we all have so much to learn from them. I also recognize that they need us more than ever to help guide them, support them and to provide them with the tools they need both academically and emotionally to wade successfully through our ever changing and complicated world.

As I look back on my 4 ½ years here, I am amazed at all of the wonderful work we have accomplished together to create a fantastic educational experience for them. I want you to know that I have enjoyed working in partnership with all of you to support our students. I am appreciative of our dedicated staff, the PTA, School Force, parents and community members who have demonstrated they will do whatever it takes to give our students all that they deserve.  We could not have made such tremendous academic gains, or provided such a safe and well-rounded school experience for our students without the long standing support of all of you.

Through your efforts, advocacy and belief in Ralston, we have been able to build upon Ralston’s history of academic achievement. We have been able to continue to offer our students many engaging educational opportunities and programs. You have supported our teachers, music program, athletics, library, enrichment and extracurricular programs. Through your generous ongoing support we have been able to provide our students and staff with necessary technological tools that are now integrated into every classroom and have changed the delivery of instruction in classes across all content areas. I am so happy that Ralston is well on its way to continued success in all areas and on an upward path toward excellence and outstanding achievement.

I will always look back on my time at Ralston fondly. I will cherish the memories and never forget all of the Ralston Ram families, students and staff who have crossed my path. Since I will only be one block away at the District office in my new role, I will be able to continue to maintain a partnership with you. I look forward to visiting Ralston, continuing work at enhancing the curriculum and offerings, and supporting our teachers and students. I will definitely be able to keep close tabs on all of Ralston’s activities, including all of the exciting Bond construction that will soon be underway at Ralston.

I am comforted in knowing that Ralston will be in good and capable hands under the leadership of Donna Sims, as interim Principal and Matt Pavao, as interim Assistant Principal. Together they are a great, hardworking and dedicated team. I have witnessed their dedication to our school and know they have the best interests of our students at heart.

I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for your support through the years. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to have served as principal. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have shared these years together with you.

I wish you all the best!

Take good care,

Jennifer J. Kollmann

Principal
