Social Thinking Conference POSTPONED

Due to the mounting concern about the Covid-19 Coronavirus in recent days, and in response to the Governor’s declaration of a state of emergency, we have decided to postpone the April 18th Social Thinking conference.

We have close to 100 people from all over the Bay Area registered for the event, many of whom work with or care for young children. Our attendees’ health and well being is our top priority. We are working on rescheduling the conference and will notify you once details are confirmed.

If you have registered for the conference, you will receive a full refund. If you do not receive a refund notification by Friday, please contact us at

I sincerely apologize for the change of plans. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Zoom Fitness Class for Kids with Special Needs

Fridays 11-11:30am
Sponsored by Opening Doors PTA

Exercise is critical to our physical and mental well-being. However, under the state’s shelter in place rule, staying active is a challenge especially to kids with special needs.

Opening Doors PTA is partnering with BuddiesInACTION to provide virtual training and group classes while we are all at home! We will be hosting a free 30 minute group class for the special needs community in the Peninsula Bay Area on Fridays at 11am via Zoom.  All abilities welcome and no equipment necessary!

In order to participate, we ask that you complete the waiver attached and email is back to Jen.

We look forward to seeing you for our first class Friday May 8th at 11am!

Let's move together!

If you have any questions or are interested in setting up a 1:1 session instead, please email Jen or call 650-704-8559.

BRSSD Parent Support Group

Wednesdays 3-4pm

Do you need help and guidance on how to support your child’s emotional needs? Do you want to make connections with other parents who have similar struggles?

Marriage and Family Therapist Kate Williams is hosting a Zoom parent support group Wednesdays from 3-4pm.

She sees students with mental health needs at all 7 schools in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District and would like to be a source of support and help to parents during this difficult time.

If you would like to know more about the group, email Kate.

Dear friends,

San Mateo County's chief health officer issued a public statement on 3/5 that signaled a turn toward an aggressive approach to minimizing residents' risk of contracting the coronavirus. You can read the full statement and get up-to-date information about COVID-19 here.

Opening Doors PTA serves a vulnerable population. Our community's health and well-being is our top priority.

We have made the following changes to our programs and events:

After School Classes:

We have canceled our art class and the PEERS social skills class for the remainder of the spring semester. Refunds have been issued. The other two classes we subsidize (fitness and dance) are run by third-party organizers and the decision will be up to them.

4/18/20 Social Thinking Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel:
The conference has been canceled. We are working with the Social Thinking team to reschedule the event.

4/25/20 "Beyond Eye Contact" seminar at the Redwood Shores Public Library:
We will make a decision about the seminar no later than April 11th.

It is likely that our lives will be significantly impacted by COVID-19. This can be especially stressful for families with special needs. We urge you to be prepared by staying up-to-date with the latest information and following the recommendations of the CDC and WHO. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if we can be of assistance!
