Social Thinking Conference POSTPONED

Due to the mounting concern about the Covid-19 Coronavirus in recent days, and in response to the Governor’s declaration of a state of emergency, we have decided to postpone the April 18th Social Thinking conference.

We have close to 100 people from all over the Bay Area registered for the event, many of whom work with or care for young children. Our attendees’ health and well being is our top priority. We are working on rescheduling the conference and will notify you once details are confirmed.

If you have registered for the conference, you will receive a full refund. If you do not receive a refund notification by Friday, please contact us at

I sincerely apologize for the change of plans. Thank you so much for your understanding.

COVID-19 Parent Preparedness Support Group for Special Needs Families

Zoom Webinar

Families around the world are affected by COVID-19, and those with special needs are impacted in unique ways.

School closures and social distancing measures are particularly challenging for us. Our kids struggle to understand and cope with the unexpected disruptions to their familiar routines. As caregivers we have lost the respite time we desperately need.

Maisie Soetantyo, co-founder of the CATCH clinic, has been working with children on the spectrum since 1994. She will cover the following topics:

• Creating a home routine, including different types of visual schedules.
• Managing transitions and resistance.
• Minimizing parent and child stress
• Fun activity ideas
• Self Care

Ms Soetantyo received her degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology from UCLA under the supervision of Dr. Ivar Lovaas. She was the Supervising Therapist and Branch Clinic Supervisor for the Center for Autism and Related Disorders for 6 years. She was also a member of the inaugural class of Dr. Steven Gutsteins’ RDI® Consultants Certification program.

In 2001, Maisie co-founded the Comprehensive Autism Treatment for Children clinic in Sunnyvale California. The clinic is a facility that combines all aspects of treatment for ASD children and adolescents into one, all-inclusive treatment plan.

Dear friends,

San Mateo County's chief health officer issued a public statement on 3/5 that signaled a turn toward an aggressive approach to minimizing residents' risk of contracting the coronavirus. You can read the full statement and get up-to-date information about COVID-19 here.

Opening Doors PTA serves a vulnerable population. Our community's health and well-being is our top priority.

We have made the following changes to our programs and events:

After School Classes:

We have canceled our art class and the PEERS social skills class for the remainder of the spring semester. Refunds have been issued. The other two classes we subsidize (fitness and dance) are run by third-party organizers and the decision will be up to them.

3/18/20 PTA meeting:

Our 3/18 PTA meeting will be held via Zoom from 9:30am to 10am*. Meeting ID 641 462 879

Meeting Agenda:
Approval of December Meeting Minutes
Past events
Changes due to COVID-19
Budget Review
Election of 2020-2021 Executive Board Members
New Fundraising Model
Special Programs Update

*We have canceled the presentation by speaker Maisie Soetantyo.

4/18/20 Social Thinking Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel:
The conference has been canceled. We are working with the Social Thinking team to reschedule the event.

4/25/20 "Beyond Eye Contact" seminar at the Redwood Shores Public Library:
We will make a decision about the seminar no later than April 11th.

It is likely that our lives will be significantly impacted by COVID-19. This can be especially stressful for families with special needs. We urge you to be prepared by staying up-to-date with the latest information and following the recommendations of the CDC and WHO. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if we can be of assistance!
