Social Thinking Conference POSTPONED

Due to the mounting concern about the Covid-19 Coronavirus in recent days, and in response to the Governor’s declaration of a state of emergency, we have decided to postpone the April 18th Social Thinking conference.

We have close to 100 people from all over the Bay Area registered for the event, many of whom work with or care for young children. Our attendees’ health and well being is our top priority. We are working on rescheduling the conference and will notify you once details are confirmed.

If you have registered for the conference, you will receive a full refund. If you do not receive a refund notification by Friday, please contact us at openingdoorspta@yahoo.com.

I sincerely apologize for the change of plans. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Zoom Fitness Class for Kids with Special Needs

Fridays 11-11:30am

Exercise is critical to our physical and mental well-being. However, under the state’s shelter in place rule, staying active is a challenge especially to kids with special needs.

Opening Doors PTA is partnering with BuddiesInACTION to provide virtual training and group classes while we are all at home! We will be hosting a free 30 minute group class for the special needs community.  All abilities welcome and no equipment necessary!

In order to participate, we ask that you complete the waiver attached and email is back to jen@buddiesinaction.com

Mindfulness Workshops for Kids

Week of June 15 (incoming 3rd to 5th graders)         2-3 pm

Week of June 22 (incoming 6th to 8th graders)      2-3 pm

Our lives have changed radically in the past few months. Uncertainty about the future looms and stress is at an all-time-high. Being separated from friends and loved ones makes matters ten times worse. However, this is also a precious opportunity to practice mindfulness. Just as Shelter-In-Place has been an opportunity for the natural world to settle into stillness and become clear and unpolluted, SIP is also an opportunity to cultivate inner stillness and mental clarity.

Opening Doors PTA is sponsoring a Summer Mindfulness Workshop via Zoom for highly-sensitive kids who struggle with emotional regulation and social connection. Our instructor will pair proven social skills training with instruction on the four foundations of mindfulness to help students cultivate deeper inner and outer well-being during this unusual time.

Ellen McCarty, a former senior mindfulness instructor for the non-profit Mindful Schools, has taught mindfulness to students and families throughout the San Francisco Bay Area since 2011. She is a credentialed Education Specialist with an Autism Authorization from the State of California and has trained in and taught a variety of social skills programs designed for students with Autism including Social Cognitive Theory. She also has extensive experience working with students who struggle with emotional disturbance and social isolation. She is committed to providing a safety-net of social support for students who are in danger of becoming isolated, anti-social or self-harming and to give those students the tools they need to develop inner and outer kindness.
